Brownwood Elementary School opened its doors as a first through sixth grade school in the fall of 1961. It is named after the Brown family who originally owned the nine acre plot on which it was built.
In 1979 a public kindergarten was added and Brownwood became a kindergarten through fourth grade school. Since its inception, Brownwood has undergone six expansions. Currently the campus is composed of twenty-eight classrooms, library, gym, administrative area, lunchroom, activity room, outdoor classroom, and playground.
Brownwood is one of three kindergarten through fourth grade schools in the Scottsboro City School System. The school serves students living in the eastern part of the city.
